Inside: Our 9-year-old is the closest to a professional baker as can be. She makes the BEST homemade pancakes that exist in the entire world. I am confident of this.
And, it doesn’t hurt that she’s beautiful, kind, confident, strong and brave.
Today we’re sharing Kenna’s Homemade Pancake recipe. And, the best part is that you don’t need to be 9 years old to make this delicious homemade pancake recipe, either! You can be any age – and you’ll likely be able to find all of the ingredients in your pantry right now.
Homemade Pancake Mix
I was recently talking to one of my best friends about our daughter’s baking and the gigantic mess that it makes.
I told my friend that I was hesitant to really let our daughter bake in the kitchen because it makes such a mess and frankly, I don’t want to find the time in my already busy schedule to clean in all up.
My girlfriend was quick to correct me. She’s SO glad she started letting her daughter bake and cook when she did, as now, her daughter, now 13 is full-on cooking real meals for their family, clean up after herself – and able to be a fantastic babysitter for her siblings and other families.
I also love to cook breakfast, so we actually love to cook together. My favorite breakfast recipes are Bubble Up Sausage Casserole, Biscuits and Gravy Casserole, Easy Bacon Egg and Cheese Breakfast Casserole and my personal favorite: this Breakfast Quiche Recipe that uses an easy pre-made flaky pie crust!
The mess is real, but kids have to be taught how to clean up after themselves in the kitchen. This is what the kitchen looked like as we were both making different things:
And, cleaning up:
So, I decided to let go of my OCD characteristics in this scenario and let her have at it in the kitchen!
The biggest thing that I have learned with allowing our daughter to be independent in the kitchen is to read over the ingredients list with her first. Especially the amounts. Because: 1/4 cup of sugar is not the same as 1 1/4 cup of sugar. 🙂
And, yes, that has happened. 🙂 So, just looking over her shoulder a bit with the ingredients and overseeing her getting food in and out of the oven/griddle has begun to pay off – she makes a mean pancake – and this is her very own recipe.

- 2 tbsp granulated sugar

- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter

Mix wet ingredients, add dry ingredients to wet, stirring to combine until smooth
Spray griddle or pan with cooking spray
Heat griddle to med-high heat or 300 degrees

Serve warm and top with butter and syrup
Enjoy!
