15 Comfort Food Pasta Dinners (Better Than Takeout)

Listen, I love takeout as much as the next person.

But sometimes you order pasta from a place and it shows up in a soggy little container, lukewarm, with a sad piece of garlic bread, and it costs $24 and you’re like, hold on a minute.

I could have done this. I could have done this so much better.

And the thing is, you really, really can. Here are 15 comfort food pasta dinners that taste so much better than takeout, are way cheaper, and don’t even require you to put real pants on.

1. Crockpot Crack Chicken Pasta

Crockpot Crack Chicken Pasta

The pasta my whole family asks for on repeat. Creamy, ranchy, cheesy, with tender chicken on top.

The slow cooker does the work and you just boil pasta. Better than any creamy pasta I’ve ever ordered out. Click here for the full recipe →

I throw the chicken in frozen most mornings and let the slow cooker handle the rest while everybody is at school or work. By dinner the house smells like a ranch dressing miracle and nobody has to know how little effort it took.

This one doubles easily if you know company is coming, and the leftovers reheat beautifully with a splash of milk stirred in.

2. Chicken Spaghetti

Chicken Spaghetti

This is one of those weeknight legends. Creamy, a little cheesy, super forgiving.

Reheats so beautifully for lunch the next day. I genuinely think it’s better than any chicken pasta on a chain restaurant menu. Click here for the full recipe →

Rotisserie chicken from the store makes this one come together even faster on a busy night. It is also a great way to use up leftover chicken sitting in the fridge from Sunday dinner.

This is a great church potluck dish because it holds well in a covered dish and still tastes great after sitting for a while.

3. Creamy Chicken Bowtie Pasta

Creamy Chicken Bowtie Pasta

Bowtie pasta is just adorable, sorry. And tossed in a creamy chicken sauce? Pure 30 minute weeknight magic.

This is what I would cook for someone if they were having a hard day and needed a real life food hug. Click here for the full recipe →

Cube the chicken small so it cooks fast, and have the sauce ingredients measured out before you start the pasta water. That way the whole thing really does come together in one pan and one pot.

Leftovers keep for a few days in the good Tupperware, and a splash of milk brings the sauce right back to life when you reheat it.

4. Crockpot Chicken Alfredo

Crockpot Chicken Alfredo

Garlicky, creamy, restaurant style Alfredo, but the slow cooker did the work.

Tastes like the kind of pasta you’d order at a cozy little Italian place, except cheaper, and you didn’t have to leave the house. Click here for the full recipe →

Chicken thighs are the move here since they stay so tender after a long slow cook. Boil your noodles right before serving so they don’t turn mushy sitting in the crockpot.

This is an easy one to set in the morning before the kids even wake up, and it will be ready and waiting the second everyone walks in the door starving.

5. Homemade Alfredo Sauce

Homemade Alfredo Sauce

Once you make Alfredo from scratch, the jarred stuff feels like a sad memory. This recipe takes about 10 minutes and tastes like an actual restaurant.

Toss it with fettuccine and a little black pepper and you’re golden. Click here for the full recipe →

Freshly grated cheese melts so much smoother than the bagged pre shredded kind, so if you have five extra minutes it is worth it. This sauce also makes a fantastic base for chicken Alfredo lasagna or a quick baked pasta.

It does not love the freezer since cream sauces can separate, but it reheats fine on the stove over low heat with a little extra milk whisked in.

6. Creamy Baked Ziti

Creamy Baked Ziti

Saucy, cheesy, golden on top, the kind of pasta bake that makes you feel like you have your life together. I bring this to potlucks and friends actually fight over it.

I have witnessed this. Click here for the full recipe →

This is a fantastic make ahead dish. Assemble the whole thing the night before, cover it, and stash it in the fridge until you’re ready to bake.

It also freezes really well unbaked, which makes it one of my go to meals to drop off for a friend with a new baby.

7. Chicken Tetrazzini

Chicken Tetrazzini

Creamy chicken pasta hiding under a golden cheese topping. The whole table goes quiet for the first few bites, which is honestly the highest compliment a dinner can get.

So much better than restaurant chicken pasta. Click here for the full recipe →

Leftover turkey works just as well as chicken here, so keep this one in your back pocket for the week after a holiday. A handful of frozen peas stirred in is an easy way to sneak in some vegetables.

It reheats beautifully in the oven under foil so the topping doesn’t dry out.

8. Pizza Pasta Bake

Pizza Pasta Bake

It tastes like pizza but it’s pasta. Pepperoni, mozzarella, marinara, all baked together.

The kids absolutely lose their minds for this and I cannot blame them. Way better than that one greasy delivery pizza place. Click here for the full recipe →

This is a great one for picky eaters since you can load half the pan with pepperoni and leave the other half plain cheese. Any leftover pizza toppings hiding in your fridge can get tossed in too.

It reheats great for school lunches the next day, warm or cold.

9. Weeknight Cheesy Tortellini Casserole

Cheesy Tortellini Casserole

Cheese stuffed tortellini, baked in marinara, with even more cheese on top. It’s pretty much cheese inception.

Fast enough for a weeknight, satisfying enough that nobody is asking for takeout. Click here for the full recipe →

Frozen tortellini works just fine here, so there is no need to thaw anything before you start. Brown a little Italian sausage and stir it in if you want to stretch it into a heartier dinner.

This one goes straight from fridge to oven the next day if you have extra, no fuss involved.

10. Easy Crockpot Lasagna

Easy Crockpot Lasagna

All the cozy lasagna feelings, none of the oven heat or layering stress. The slow cooker does the whole thing for you.

I think this might actually be better than the lasagna I order at restaurants. Don’t tell them I said that. Click here for the full recipe →

Break the noodles to fit your crockpot instead of trying to keep them whole, nobody will ever know. This is such a good one for a hot day since it does not heat up the kitchen like the oven would.

A quick garlic bread and a bagged salad and dinner is basically done.

11. Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

Imagine if regular lasagna and chicken Alfredo had a baby. That’s this.

White sauce, layers of pasta, shredded chicken, and so much melty cheese. So pretty when you cut into it. Click here for the full recipe →

Rotisserie chicken saves a ton of time on this one since the shredding is already done for you. Let it rest for a good ten minutes after baking so the layers hold together when you slice it.

It freezes beautifully in individual squares, which makes for the easiest lunch you’ll ever pull out of the deep freezer.

12. Lasagna Without Ricotta

Lasagna Without Ricotta

For the people in my life (me) who are not really into ricotta. This swaps it for cottage cheese and the texture is honestly perfect.

Creamy, layered, beautifully cheesy. Restaurants can’t compete. Click here for the full recipe →

If you or your kids are cottage cheese skeptics, just blend it smooth first and nobody will ever notice the texture. This is a great one to make on a Sunday and bake off later in the week.

It reheats just as well as classic lasagna, so don’t be afraid to make the full pan.

13. Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese

Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese

The mac and cheese of mac and cheeses. Creamy on the inside, golden and crispy on top.

I bring this to every family dinner and the dish always comes home empty. Better than any restaurant mac you’ve ever paid $14 for. Click here for the full recipe →

A blend of two or three cheeses melts smoother than just one, so raid whatever odds and ends you have in the cheese drawer. This is the dish I am always asked to bring to a potluck, and I never say no.

It also travels really well in a covered dish if you wrap it in a towel to keep it warm on the drive.

14. Instant Pot Panera Mac and Cheese (Copycat)

Instant Pot Panera Mac and Cheese

This is the actual Panera mac, except you make it in the Instant Pot for, like, a fraction of the price. Same creamy, dreamy white cheddar magic.

Why drive there when you can make it in 15 minutes in your kitchen? Click here for the full recipe →

White cheddar is really what makes this taste like the original, so try not to swap it for regular cheddar if you can help it. This comes together so fast it works even on the nights you forgot to plan dinner at all.

Leftovers reheat great with a splash of milk stirred in over low heat.

15. Crock Pot Beef and Noodles

Crock Pot Beef and Noodles

Tender shredded beef in a rich gravy over noodles. This is church basement potluck food in the best possible way.

Cozy, hearty, completely zero stress. The kind of pasta dinner that hugs you back. Click here for the full recipe →

A cheap chuck roast works wonderfully here and gets fall apart tender after its long day in the slow cooker. Serve it over mashed potatoes instead of noodles sometimes for a fun switch up.

The gravy thickens even more overnight in the fridge, so leftovers might need a splash of broth when you reheat them.

Save this list for the next time you’re tempted to spend $40 on lukewarm takeout pasta. Future you, in your softest sweatpants on the couch with a real homemade dinner, will thank you. 💛

Questions I Get About These Dinners

Can I make any of these ahead of time?

Most of the baked pasta dishes like the ziti, tortellini casserole, and both lasagnas are great assembled the night before and baked the next day. Just cover and refrigerate, then add a few extra minutes to the bake time since it’s starting cold.

Do these pasta dinners freeze well?

The baked casseroles and lasagnas freeze beautifully, especially in individual portions for easy lunches later. Cream based sauces like Alfredo can separate a bit in the freezer, but they smooth back out with a little milk when reheated on the stove.

What if my kids are picky eaters?

The pizza pasta bake and the mac and cheese are usually the safest bets, and you can always keep toppings on the side so everyone builds their own plate. Simple swaps like plain noodles under the sauce also help picky eaters ease into a new dish.

Can I double any of these recipes?

Yes, the slow cooker recipes and the baked casseroles all double easily if you’re feeding a crowd or just want extra for the deep freezer. Just make sure your crockpot or baking dish is actually big enough before you commit.

What are good swaps if I’m missing an ingredient?

Rotisserie chicken can stand in for cooked chicken in almost every recipe here, and any short pasta shape can usually sub for another in a pinch. Ground beef and shredded chicken are pretty interchangeable too if that’s what you have on hand.
