When I was a new cook in the kitchen I wondered how do you cook pork butt – and much to my surprise, this is by far, was the easiest and most inexpensive cut of meat that feeds a large crowd on a budget – and they’re going to be raving fans, nonetheless, so I’d say you’re winning big time!
And, you’ll find that once I snag a pork shoulder roast, I use it, and use it and use it! I love how versatile they are, really!

Finally, enough rambling- here is how I make our Pork Butt Roast in the Crock Pot.
A pork butt roast is the most tender, flavorful and budget friendly cut of pork there is. You’ll love having this delicious, shredded meat on hand to make a plethora of meals for the week.
Slow cooker pork butt ingredients:
- 1 can Dr Pepper soda
- 2 T Rib Rub ( I use Famous Dave’s rib rub)
- 2 tsp. Himalayan Salt
- 2 tsp black pepper
- 6-8 pound pork butt (less if you don’t want leftovers)
How to prepare and roast pork butt in the Crock Pot:
- Combine spices
- Rub spices all over outside of pork butt
- Brown sides of pork butt in a hot pan
- Once all sides are browned, place in a slow cooker
- Pour Dr Pepper around sides of roast
- Cook on low for 8-10 hours until pull apart tender

Do Boston Butt roasts have a bone?
Yes – this cut of pork does have a bone. But after it’s been slow cooked for the appropriate amount of time you’ll be able to literally reach in and very easily take the bone from the roast with no meat even attached. This cut of meat is pull apart tender.
Do you add barbecue sauce to your cooked pork butt?
I add barbecue sauce to the portion that I’ll be serving as pulled pork sandwiches only. This gives me a lot of pork leftover to be able to use it for other Boston Butt recipes.

Yep! It sure is.

6 to 8 hours on low or 4 to 5 hours on high.
Always cook the pork roast until it is pull apart tender. Ultimately, the internal temperature for pork to be safe to eat is 160 degrees.
