So you’re hosting a graduation party. Or a big cookout.

Or any kind of gathering where 20 plus people are about to descend on your house and expect to be fed. I’m just going to say it, the only way to survive this with your sanity intact is to make absolutely everything ahead of time.

I have hosted enough of these to know exactly what works. The dishes that taste BETTER after sitting overnight, the ones you can pull from the fridge ten minutes before guests arrive.

Here are 15 make ahead recipes for graduation parties and cookouts that let you actually enjoy your own party instead of running around like a panicked caterer.

1. Crockpot BBQ Chicken

Crockpot BBQ Chicken

Make this the day before, store it in the fridge, and reheat it right in the slow cooker the day of the party. The flavors actually get even better overnight.

Pile it on a giant tray of buns with coleslaw and you’re feeding a crowd in 5 minutes flat. Click here for the full recipe →

I like to use bone in chicken thighs for this because they stay juicy even after a full day of reheating. If you’re feeding a real crowd, just double the recipe and run two crockpots at once.

Leftovers freeze great in a gallon bag laid flat in the freezer, so any extra becomes an easy weeknight dinner later. Just thaw and reheat with a splash of extra sauce so it doesn’t dry out.

2. Pulled Beef Slow Cooker

Pulled Beef Slow Cooker

Tender pulled beef that’s perfect for sandwiches and tacos. Make it the day before and the flavors deepen overnight.

Reheat in the crockpot and let guests pile it on rolls themselves. Hands off party hosting at its finest. Click here for the full recipe →

A cheap chuck roast works just as well here as a fancier cut, which makes this one easy on the budget when you’re feeding a big group. Shred it while it’s still warm since it pulls apart so much easier.

Set out a taco bar with tortillas, cheese, and salsa alongside the sandwich rolls so people can choose their own adventure. It also reheats beautifully in the microwave if you end up with extra.

3. Crockpot Pork Butt Roast

Crockpot Pork Butt Roast

Slow cooked pork that becomes the most insanely tender pulled pork. Make it ahead, refrigerate, reheat with a splash of broth so it stays juicy.

The pulled pork everyone fights over at parties. Click here for the full recipe →

Pork butt is forgiving, so it’s a great one if you’re new to slow cooker cooking and nervous about ruining a big cut of meat. Save the drippings when you shred it and pour some back in for reheating.

It also freezes really well once it’s shredded, so consider making a double batch and tucking half away for a rainy day dinner.

4. Grape Jelly Meatballs

Grape Jelly Meatballs

Two ingredients, one slow cooker, zero leftovers ever. Make them the morning of (or the night before) and let them stay warm in the crockpot during the whole party.

Sweet, savory, the legendary potluck meatball. Click here for the full recipe →

Frozen meatballs go straight into the crockpot with no thawing needed, which is exactly the kind of shortcut a busy party host deserves. Toothpicks nearby turn this into a grab and go appetizer instead of a sit down dish.

If you want to stretch it for a bigger crowd, a second bag of meatballs and a bit more sauce does the trick without any extra effort.

5. The Best Macaroni Salad

Best Macaroni Salad

Macaroni salad genuinely tastes BETTER the next day, which is wild and so convenient. Make it the night before, store it covered in the fridge, and pull it out for the party.

The bowl always comes home empty. Click here for the full recipe →

If the salad looks a little dry after sitting overnight, just stir in a spoonful of mayo before serving to bring it right back to creamy. This is the kind of dish that no one questions seeing at every single Midwest gathering, and for good reason.

It travels well in the good Tupperware if you need to bring it somewhere, so it’s a safe pick for a potluck too.

6. Cowboy Baked Beans

Cowboy Baked Beans

Smoky, sweet, savory, with bacon and ground beef. These reheat beautifully.

Make them a day ahead, scoop into the crockpot the day of, and they stay warm and ready while guests come and go. Click here for the full recipe →

Brown the beef and bacon the night before and you’ll cut your morning of prep down to almost nothing. This one also happens to be a great way to use up whatever beans are already sitting in your pantry.

They hold their texture well in the fridge too, so leftovers make a solid lunch the next day with some cornbread on the side.

7. Crockpot Cheesy Potatoes

Crockpot Cheesy Potatoes

Assemble in the slow cooker the night before, refrigerate, then turn it on the morning of. By the time guests arrive, you have the cheesiest, most addictive potato side just sitting there looking gorgeous.

Click here for the full recipe →

Frozen hash browns mean there’s no peeling or chopping involved, which is exactly my speed on party week. Give it a stir every so often while it cooks so the edges don’t get too crispy before the middle catches up.

This one also plays nice next to just about any of the meats on this list, so it’s an easy default side to pair with whatever you’re serving.

8. Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese

Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese

Assemble the entire 9×13 the night before, cover, refrigerate, bake when you need it. Comes out golden and bubbly and creamy.

The dish always comes home empty. The dish is always empty. Click here for the full recipe →

Since it goes into the oven cold from the fridge, just tack on a few extra minutes of bake time and check that the center is hot all the way through. This is one of those dishes that disappears fastest at a graduation party, so consider making two pans if you know your crowd.

Leftovers reheat nicely in the microwave with a splash of milk stirred in to loosen it back up.

9. Crock Pot Mac and Cheese with Corn

Crock Pot Mac and Cheese with Corn

Sweet corn folded into creamy mac, all in the slow cooker. Set it up the morning of and just let it do its thing.

Stays warm and ready for hours, which is exactly what you need at a party. Click here for the full recipe →

Frozen or canned corn both work fine here, so use whatever you already have in the pantry or freezer. Give it a stir about halfway through so the cheese sauce stays smooth instead of settling at the bottom.

This one is a real crowd pleaser for picky younger guests too, since the sweet corn softens the sharpness of the cheese.

10. Crockpot Spinach Artichoke Dip

Crockpot Spinach Artichoke Dip

Mix it up the night before, store covered in the fridge, scoop into the crockpot the day of. People will gather around it for hours and dip bread into it nonstop.

The most foolproof party dip there is. Click here for the full recipe →

Set the crockpot to warm instead of low once the dip is heated through, so it doesn’t scorch on the edges while people graze for hours. A bag of frozen chopped spinach thawed and squeezed dry saves you a ton of chopping time.

Serve it with a mix of crackers, bread, and veggies so everyone has an option they like.

11. Real Cheese Queso Blanco Dip

Real Cheese Queso Blanco Dip

Restaurant style white queso made the day before, then reheated low and slow at the party. Set it next to a giant bowl of tortilla chips and watch it become the most loved table at the entire event.

Click here for the full recipe →

Reheat this one low and slow, whether that’s on the stovetop or in a small crockpot, so the cheese doesn’t break or turn grainy. A splash of milk stirred in while reheating brings it right back to smooth and pourable.

If you want a little kick, extra diced jalapenos on the side let people spice up their own bowl.

12. Creamy Buffalo Chicken Dip

Creamy Buffalo Chicken Dip

Assemble the night before, refrigerate, then warm it up before guests arrive. Spicy, creamy, ranchy, completely irresistible.

Buffalo chicken dip is the dip dynasty for a reason. Click here for the full recipe →

A rotisserie chicken from the store shreds up in minutes and saves you the step of cooking chicken from scratch. Warm it in the oven instead of the microwave if you want the top to get that slightly bubbly, golden look.

Celery sticks and extra crackers on the side help stretch the dip further for a big group.

13. No Bake Eclair Cake

No-Bake Eclair Cake

This dessert literally REQUIRES being made the day before. The graham crackers magically turn into cake overnight.

Pull it from the fridge, slice it, watch it disappear. The graduation party dessert dream. Click here for the full recipe →

Since there is no oven involved at all, this is the dish to lean on when you’re already fighting for oven space with the rest of the menu. It also travels well in its pan with foil over the top if you need to bring it to someone else’s party.

Keep it chilled right up until serving time so the layers hold their shape when you slice it.

14. Strawberry Poke Cake

Strawberry Poke Cake

This cake actually NEEDS to chill for hours so the strawberry can soak through. Make it the night before, top it the day of, slice it the moment guests show up.

Pretty, pink, summery, perfect. Click here for the full recipe →

Wait to add the whipped topping until right before the party so it stays fluffy instead of weeping into the cake. This one is an easy way to make a graduation spread feel a little festive without any special equipment.

It keeps well covered in the fridge for a couple days too, so it’s fine to make it even earlier if your week is packed.

15. Cookie Dough Pie

Cookie Dough Pie

Make it a day ahead, chill until firm, slice and serve. Edible cookie dough piled into a buttery crust.

The kids (and the adults pretending to act like kids) will be sneaking second slices all afternoon. Click here for the full recipe →

Since this is an edible cookie dough recipe, there is no raw egg to worry about, so it’s an easy one to let kids help build. A store bought graham or cookie crust works in a pinch if you’re short on time that week.

Keep it in the fridge right up until you slice it so it holds together instead of going soft on the plate.

Questions I Get About These Recipes

Can I make all of these ahead of time?

Yes, that’s really the whole point of this list. Every single one of these is built to be made a day or even two ahead and then reheated or pulled straight from the fridge.

What if I need to freeze something further in advance?

The meats like the BBQ chicken, pulled beef, and pork butt all freeze really well once cooked and cooled. Freeze them flat in a bag, thaw in the fridge overnight, then reheat low and slow with a splash of broth or sauce.

Can I double any of these for a bigger crowd?

Most of these double easily, especially the slow cooker meats and the dips. Just make sure your crockpot is big enough, and if not, run two at once like I do.

What if I have picky eaters coming?

Stick with the classics like the mac and cheese, the cheesy potatoes, and the grape jelly meatballs since almost nobody turns those down. Setting out simple sides like buns, chips, and crackers also gives picky eaters something safe to build a plate around.

Can I swap ingredients if I don’t have exactly what’s listed?

Absolutely, cook like a real mom and use what’s in your fridge. Canned corn instead of frozen, a rotisserie chicken instead of cooking your own, whatever gets dinner on the table without a special trip to the store.

Save this whole list and pull it out the next time you’re hosting. The goal is to actually enjoy your own graduation party (or cookout, or birthday, or random Saturday). Future you, sitting on the porch with a glass of wine while everything just kind of takes care of itself, is going to thank you. 💛
